چکیده

Exhaustibility tests were carried out by concentrating molasses to 4 000 poise (determined a t 40°C), adding refined sugar, crystallising at 40°C for 48 hours and carrying out on the separated molasses a series of analyses which included sugars by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) as well as Lane and Eynon methods. Regression analysis of the results showed that purity of the exhausted molasses was strongly dependent on the ratios of non-sucrose to water and of reducing sugars to ash. Some small but in some cases consistent differences in exhaustibility of molasses from different mills were noted, which may have been due in part to differences in organic non-sugar components. A reference purity formula for use with the accurate GLC sugars analyses is presented. Purity values given by this formula are substantially lower than those derived using the target purity formula currently in use in South Africa, for two reasons : the higher viscosity aimed for in this work and the significant over-estimation of sugars by the Lane and Eynon methods on which the current formula molasses from different mills were noted, which may have is based. The new formula is GCP = 33,9 13,4 log (F+G) / A in which GCP = GLC Sucrose/dry solids purity. F = GLC Fructose O/o molasses. G = GLC Glucose % molasses. A = Sulphated ash % molasses.

“At the beginning of the 1960s, it was impossible to quantitate accurately the neutral sugar compositions of complex carbohydrates. A major step towards such quantitation was achieved by Charles Sweeley and his colleagues who showed that volatile derivatives of sugars could be used for quantitative analysis by gas chromatography.1 The Sweeley group synthesized trimethylsilyl derivatives. These ...

Structural confirmation of oligosaccharides newly isolated from sugar beet molasses

BACKGROUND Sugar beet molasses is a viscous by-product of the processing of sugar beets into sugar. The molasses is known to contain sucrose and raffinose, a typical trisaccharide, with a well-established structure. Although sugar beet molasses contains various other oligosaccharides as well, the structures of those oligosaccharides have not been examined in detail. The purpose of this study wa...

Simultaneous determination of lactulose and mannitol in urine of burn patients by gas-liquid chromatography.

Ratios of lactulose/mannitol excretion in urine have been used to assess the extent of intestinal permeability in various disease and trauma conditions. Reported studies have used this technique to correlate altered gastrointestinal mucosal permeability to translocation of bacteria and endotoxin, leading to occult sepsis in burn patients. Enzymatic methods of analysis for urine concentrations o...

The Effects of Soil Fertility and Nutrition on Sugarcane Quality: a Review

The fertility status of the soil and the standard of fertiliser management can have an important effect on the chemical composition and quality of cane juice. Both nutrient deficiency and nutrient excess can result in below optimum sucrose contents. Excessive potassium uptake may promote cane lodging and high potassium levels in juice can also influence the exhaustibility of final molasses, the...

Determination of Two Antiepileptic Drugs in Urine by Homogenous Liquid-Liquid Extraction Performed in A Narrow Tube Combined With Dispersive Liquid-liquid Microextraction Followed by Gas Chromatography-flame Ionization Detection

A simple and efficient homogenous liquid-liquid extraction method performed in a narrow tube combined with dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method has been presented for the simultaneous determination of two antiepileptic drugs in urine followed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. In this method, a mixture of acetonitrile and urine sample (homogenous solution) is load...
